Just got this from the Maloofs, enjoy (03.19.2010).

IRVINE, Calif. -- The Maloof Money Cup skateboarding competition is expanding to New York City this year.

Joe and Gavin Maloof, who own the NBA's Sacramento Kings, said Tuesday they will hold Maloof Money Cup New York on June 5-6 at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, featuring a street skateboarding competition. The winner will earn $100,000.

The Maloofs have agreed to donate the $1.8 million, world-class skate park they will build for the competition to the city of New York through the City Parks and Recreation Department's "Adopt-A-Park" program. Joe Maloof said the cost of the skate park will be defrayed by contributions from sponsors Vans and Monster Energy.

The Maloof Money Cup will return to Southern California for the third straight year, featuring street and vert competition, from Aug. 4-8 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

"I always felt the most important thing was to start in California, where it was born," Joe Maloof said. "We'll always stay in Orange County and the L.A. area. That will always be No. 1. However, we needed to get an East Coast presence. It's a privilege to get into New York. It's not easy to have an event in New York."

The New York competition will include a wild-card contest to give local skaters the opportunity to compete against the top pros in the industry. Pro skaters Chris Cole and Geoff Rowley, New York skating icon Steve Rodriguez and Joe Ciaglia of California Skateparks will lead the design of the street course. The New York prize purse is nearly $250,000.

The Maloof Money Cup Orange County will expand to five days.

Invited pros include defending champions Cole in the street competition and Alex Perelson in vert. The 18-year-old Perelson won last year's vert after becoming just the fourth person to land a 900 during a competition.

The Maloof Money Cup Orange County pays out nearly $500,000 in cash and prizes, with $100,000 going to the street winner and $75,000 to the vert winner.

Maloof said the competition will expand to South Africa in 2011.

"I think this thing has evolved from a small skateboarding camp to a major skateboarding event," Maloof said. "It's going to expand opportunities for skateboarding around the world."

In case you decided not to read the whole thing, the street course will become a permanent skatepark in flushing meadow park. From what I've heard about the new park, it's going to be sick.

I actually can't wait for the contest to come just so that the public can skate it the next day..

i'm glad that queens is getting something since they're losing flushing meadow park.
i'll have to make sure to hit it up before the summer is in full swing.  you know that shits going to packed when all the kids are out of school.

i guarantee it won't be indoors slowchem.  something that big would cost the city way too much to maintain.  realistically, indoor parks in the 5 boroughs(maybe SI) just isn't happening.  they'd have to charge way too much per session just to cover the rent.  it would be dope if we had a decent sized one(not homage even though its cool they have one) but it'll never happen, at least not for the general public.

Yea i figured, i'm sure it'll be a pad/helmet park the city won't let you skate a world class course without it...I'm probably gonna get tix to watch the comp then hit that course as early as possible....Finally we will have a legitimate skatepark in NYC

nooooo!   i can understand a helmet rule but full pads is LAME!  outside of little kids and bowl barnies(not that they'd want to skate a street course), no ones got full pads nor the money to buy them.

lets not forget about that new cement mecca(yes its a mecca!) they got built over by chelsea piers, that place is sick and its going to open in the spring which means i'll get to skate it everyday before the kids get out of school...up until the summer anyway.

we(the heights) are suppose to get a skatepark as well.  steveR as well as the head of the parks dept up here said it will be done in the next 2-3 years...which in city speak means 5-10 years, ha!   i'm sure it'll be a prefab park of some sort but at least its something.

I doubt it will be a full pads park (for 16+), definitely helmets since it's over the NYC 3 foot rule on city skate parks. But it's too early to tell.

Christmas comes early in 2010 for nyc skateboarders. This would be cool news even if the skatepark wasn't being donated. Here's a pic of last years park:

Do fitteds count as helmets?

So what our picnic table(which took 2 of my friends 4hrs to carry to our spot), our grindrail and our barricade were robbed by them. I have nothing against aggressive rollerbladers. Just fruitbooters.

Well, I'm meeting with them next week to talk to them about the park, I already had that as one of the questions.

I think I know part of the answer, this is NYC so for the contest they probably wanted the spots to have a NYC feel to them. Also, I know many people were asked what they wanted in a skate plaza/park for NYC, I know I said I wanted old spots brought back and consolidated and I know many others did too. But there's limited budget and space, and the spots also needed to fit for the contest so I think that's how they came up with the final result.

But I'll try to get you a more solid answer next week.

Personally my list included more spots that didn't exist anymore (harlem banks, little part of the brooklyn banks, etc). But with the little banks coming back within the next four years I guess it didn't make the cut, and I'm sure it'd be hard to incorporate it into the park design with the wall and runway.

With the way things are going in NYC, any spot can disappear at anytime or become a bust. So enjoy it while you can.

I also don't think this could possibly be to scale because according to the diagram, you have to gap over the exchange alley gap to hit the zigfield ledge or black hubba unless you got quick feet.
