Yea I was there today and a kid fell and hit his head pretty bad. I didnt see it but heard it. His face started bleeding and he kept shaking his arm like a minor seizure. Someone else on here had to have seen it also. I left before any officials came but i think someone called an ambulance and police. So i think this may be the end of no helmets. If anyone else has the rest of the story im curious.

i heard about that when i got there. there were parks people on a cart asking people to see their helmets before they went into the park. someone was saying that they told him if they catch someone without a helmet, it is a $50 ticket. after 2 $50 tickets, it is an arrest if you get caught again. kinda harsh, so be careful.

Aside from the helmet rule, and threat of tickets, even if you're just going to skate the street course you don't want to be caught without a helmet in case some guy or his board comes shooting out of the tranny section at mach 10.

i know most of us don't like telling people what to do or acting like someones parent but it seems we have no choice. i think we need to be our own police force before things gets out of hand in there.
and as much as we need to enforce a helmet rule, i feel they need to set an age limit for entry into the park because honestly speaking, beginners and little kids should NOT be allowed in that park.
all that said, i hope the kid is alright.

yeah, it is a free public park. take the c/e to 23rd and skate west to the river. i think it is open from sun up to sun down.
and as for the helmet rule. i have been there every day it has been open and other than the incident with the kid busting his head open, they haven't been enforcing helmets. hopefully it will stay this way as long as people don't screw things up. i heard that a fight broke out between a skater and a blader yesterday...bad news. things like this will only make the park more regulated. as annoying as it is to dodge the rollerbladers posting up in the worst spots, don't fight them. it isn't worth it. talk to them, that is all it takes. things are crowded, it is new, it will be that way until the hype dies down...or maloof is open. deal with it.

i disagree with most of this. sure, we need to regulate things ourselves (no scooters and bikes), but we do not need to enforce helmets ourselves. that is a joke. go enforce helmets on people playing basketball before you try to impose them on other skaters. it is a choice we should be able to make. some people choose to wear them and do, others don't. i am not going to tell someone to wear a helmet. that is like trying to force someone to get a colonoscopy (sp?). it might help them, but it is up to them to decide. and an age limit is a joke, right? there are some older dudes that are more unstable and in the way at the skatepark than some kids. people will learn to stay out of the way. you can't keep kids out of the park. it is probably better that they are there actually. hopefully it will breed some new skaters in the city that can actually skate tranny!

This all makes sense, and I don't want to tell anyone what to do either. It's ultimately everyone's call in an unsupervised park. The problem is, the HRPT has already talked about closing the park due to no one wearing helmets. I guess we're going to have to learn the hard way on this one.

People need to act responsibly. While I think that anyone old enough to serve can make their own decisions, at the end of the day the people who paid for the park is allowed to make the rules. This park is a huge gift and it shouldn't be wasted so if they say that they are going to close it, get over yourselves and wear one. Although uncomfortable at times, a helmet doesn't get in the way of skating.

if they close a skatepark because people are not wearing helmets, i will laugh. they did not spend so much money on park to just close it. worst case scenario, they will put in a pad nanny. when the parks people come around, i chill until they leave or put on one while they are there. but if nobody is around, i am not wearing one. also, at the end of the day, we all paid for the park, so we can make our own rules. are you saying that since the government "pays" for the streets and sidewalks, they can make rules about you wearing a helmet to cross the street and you would be cool with it?
also, you have to be kidding about helmets not getting in the way of skating. the skatepark is in direct sunlight and a helmet is a head warmer. i might not mind wearing one if they made it indoors with AC...maybe.
don't try to get all high and mighty. we all make our decisions. you decide to wear one, that is fine, i don't care. i decide not to wear one...most people don't wear them when there is nobody enforcing them. you want to convince us otherwise, you are swimming up stream, dude. loosen up your kneepads and relax. it is only skateboarding.
