From the Banks to the Globe: The Geography of Skateboarding in New York CityFriday June 4th, 6:30-10pm, Queens Museum of Art, Opening Event & Reception, featuring Rodney Torres. The Queens Museum of Art will launch the From the Banks to the Globe project documenting how skateboarders have made the urban landscape of New York City into one giant skatepark by marking over 100 skate spots, shops, and hangouts on the Museum’s Panorama of the City of New York, the largest architectural model in the world.
We invite the public to view the mapping project as well as participate in the unveiling of a model of the new skatepark in Flushing Meadows Park, graciously donated by Maloof Money Cup. At 7:15pm, skater and Queens native Rodney Torres, will give a guided skater’s tour of the Panorama, highlighting his own experiences as a skater in New York City. The night will conclude with Maloof Money Cup ticket giveaways, as well as a skate video program projected outside the Museum. Videos include: Queens Finest filmed and edited by Steve Marino and Jerry Mraz, a piece by Deathbowl to Downtown directors Coan Buddy Nichols and Rick Charnoski, a montage of 15 years of NYC Skateboarding (1995-2010) filmed and edited by R.B. Umali, The premiere of Howie Glover's "PRE 2K" NYC Footage filmed from (1997-1999), as well as videos featuring skaters competing at Maloof Money Cup the following two days.
